Welcome to the Affiliate marketing for Dummies guide.
Affiliate Marketing is a major source of income for most bloggers but many beginner bloggers strive to make a single dollar.
The reason they fail because they don’t have a strategy.
Affiliate Marketing isn’t easy because people don’t want to buy something from a stranger until you are a brand or your post is ranking on the first page of Google.
When I started blogging, I knew nothing about Affiliate Marketing. I randomly wrote articles, inserted my affiliate links & expected sales to come.
But guess what, I made no sale. Even nobody clicked on my affiliate links.
It was demotivating, but I didn’t give up and continued to educate myself. I spent 12 hrs/day and took various online courses & webinars.
In the end, I went from nothing to making over $3700 in my first 6 months of blogging.
I know, it is not too much, but the happiness it gave me was priceless & it definitely made me believe that I can be a full-time blogger.
So, based on what I have learned and what is working for me, I will share a few tips & tricks that will really benefit you.
Also, there is a surprise course that you want to have a look at to improve your affiliate marketing game.
So, sit on your couch, relax and go through all the sections.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a marketing strategy where a person promotes a product or service of another company to get paid.
Usually, the person receives a product affiliate link through which if anyone purchases the product, he/she receives a small commission.
Commissions can be anything from 30% to 60% & it depends on the company you are working with.
So, it’s a win-win situation for both of them because the person is getting commission and the company is getting sales.
What Are The Benefits of Affiliate Marketing?
I have seen many people asking what are the benefits of affiliate marketing & why it is one of the best ways to make an online income.
Well, here is my take.
1. Earn Money While Sleeping
One advantage of doing affiliate marketing is that you can make passive income every month.
Let me ask you, how does it feel when you wake up in the morning and check your emails only to find out you made $$$ while you were asleep.
Yeah, it is a great feeling & that’s what affiliate marketing is all about.
You just have to set up your affiliate system & it will make money on auto pilot.
Here is a simple affiliate system.
- Create a detailed, targeted post that solves a problem.
- Insert the affiliate link of a product that solves that problem.
- Drive traffic & see sales.
2. No Need to Create Your Own Product
Even though creating your own product is the best way to earn money for years to come, but it takes a lot of effort to create your own stuff.
And if you are lazy like me, then promoting someone else’s product is the best option.
So, yay, you will save a lot of time from Affiliate marketing.
3. You Are Your Own Boss
Yes, you can be your own boss and you don’t have to rely on your 9-5 job once you become a pro in Affiliate marketing.
This means you can plan to take a long vacation and travel to different places without depending on your location-based jobs.
4. Increase Your Income
By joining multiple affiliate programs, you can multiply your income within months and it keeps on increasing as your traffic grows.
Suppose, one product gives you a commissionof $10 and you make a sale every day. That adds up to $300 in a month.
If you have 5 products following the same system, you are making $1500 in a month.
So, you can see you can grow your affiliate income and there is no limit.
Things To Do Before Starting Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing doesn’t mean writing a post and sticking it up with affiliate links.
Even if you place them 3, 4 or even 10 times in your content, it will probably not convert.
So, instead of following this tactic, you first need to concentrate on building a proper foundation to kick-off your affiliate game.
I highly recommend the below points before you even start with Affiliate Marketing.
1. Set-up A Self Hosted Blog
It’s time to say bye-bye to your free platforms and instead invest in a self-hosted blog. A self-hosted blog is a great way to appear as a professional.
I mean, nobody wants to buy any product from websites that have URLs such as “sitename.blogspot.com” or “sitename.wix.com”.
People only buy if they trust a person and here, your website is that person.
You don’t want your site to appear as spam with such URL’s. So, make sure you invest some money on a domain name & a web host.

2. Write Helpful Content For Your Readers
Your content will decide whether your audience wants to buy your affiliate product or not.
If your content isn’t helpful, then you might not see any conversion.
People only buys when they are dealing with a problem and looking for a satisfied solution.
If you are not writing such contents, then its very difficult to see any progress.
Therefore, find problems in your niche & write great helpful contents targeting them.
3. Promotion Strategy
Promotion is a critical part of Affiliate marketing.
Think about it, what if people don’t know about your blog or your content, then how do they buy from you?
That’s when promotion plays a crucial role because it makes sure that your content is getting seen by people.
You need to find out where your target audience lives and that’s where you need to promote your content.
You can either promote it on social platforms or directly rank them on the search engine.
I suggest you go with Pinterest when you are starting out because you can literally drive tons of traffic within a few months.
If you are new, ensure to read my Pinterest guide to learn more.
Other places where you can drive traffic are Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, Forums, Quora.
4. Learn SEO
You should at least learn basic SEO that can be implemented on your blog.
Though, SEO is a vast topic but you can at least learn basic On-Page SEO strategies to apply in your contents.
This will help you to get some organic traffic over time.
5. Add A Disclaimer
The last thing you should never forget is to add a disclaimer before adding any affiliate links which make everything legal.
According to FTC, you need to inform your readers they are being compensated for anything they click on.
As an example, you can see an affiliate disclaimer at the top of this article.
Best Affiliate Marketing Tips For Creating Contents
1. Target Right Keyword
Ranking article on Google is the best thing you can do to make affiliate sales.
But its not easy if your blog is new & don’t have enough domain authority.
In such case, you should target less competitive keywords i.e. long tail keywords.
You can read this guide to learn more about keyword research.
Another thing is you should also target buying keywords that people usually use to buy products.
Keywords such as Best, Top, Cheap, Review, Coupon are some of them.
For example, “Best headphones under $50” or “Cheap GoPro Alternatives” can be a good example.
If you can rank such keywords on the first page of Google, you’ll definitely see better sales.
2. Include Call-to-action
It is necessary to tell your readers what they need to do after reading your content.
Whether it is buying or signing up, you need to mention it in your content so that the readers will take the necessary action.
For example, you must have seen many YouTube videos where the creator always asks you to subscribe to their channel which is a Call-to-action.
In the same way, you should never forget to add a Call-To-Action at the beginning, middle & end of your post specially if you are writing a review post.
A few examples are
- Click here to check out
- Buy from here
- Click here to know more
Most people on the internet are fast readers. They like to scan contents to save their time.
So in this case, if your article language sounds boring, then they might hit the back button and you would lose a precious visitor who could have been a potential customer.
That is why you need to opt for a different writing style through which you can connect with your target audience.
It can be humor wise or storytelling because we feel more connected to people like us.
If there is a person who is explaining something with humor and storytelling, then you will be more interested in listening to him rather than a person who is just explaining it straightforward.
So always implement something in your content writing style that makes you unique.
If that uniqueness can connect well with your audience, then you will surely see engagement and sales.
Also, ensure to use the words “YOU” & “I” in your content which makes it more personalized & your audience will get a feeling you are talking to them.
4. Focus On Helping Rather Than Selling The Product
You don’t want to sound like a Salesman who is trying to sell his product.
Instead, you must sound like a person who genuinely wants to help by suggesting great products.
Remember, you need to SHOW THEM & not TELL THEM.
Showing means you are introducing them to a product and you are not forcing them to buy it from you.
Whereas telling them means you are asking them to buy this product from you. It sounds more like an order.
Therefore, always remember this approach while writing affiliate content.
If they trust you and finds your content helpful, they will automatically buy your stuff.
5. Provide High-quality Content
This is one of the most important things you need to consider while writing your content.
You need to provide high-value content that your audience will love to read.
Normally, if you search anything on Google, the first-page search result articles are usually over 1000 – 2500 words.
That’s because these are filled with lots of information which answers everything related to the search query.
If you write a well-detailed content with a proper SEO, then over time you will have better chances to rank.
Example of Targeting The Right Keyword
Always write content intending to rank it on the first page of Google.
Let me give you an example:
There is an article in which I wrote about how non-US bloggers can receive their Amazon affiliate income.
In this post, I recommended Payoneer payment system (affiliate).
As you can see, my post is ranking on the first page and the whole post is about solving a problem.
I don’t promote this article, but still, it is converting well. I have made 38 conversions in last 2 years that is worth $1,330.
There is another post I wrote about a YouTube tool “Tubebuddy” which is also ranking on the first page.
Though it doesn’t have a high search volume, still, it is giving me sales on autopilot.
Have you observed something why they are converting well?
Its because I have targeted a problem and gave a solution by recommending a genuine product (affiliate).
So, people dealing with this problem made a search on Google and landed on my post.
They were satisfied by my solution and decided to buy the product I am suggesting & thats how I got the sale.
This is the simple formula you should use for Affiliate Marketing.
How To Find Affiliate Programs For Your Niche?
Many bloggers have a hard time finding the right niche related affiliate programs for their blog. Even, I too faced the same problem during my initial days.
However, with time, I came to know some genuine ways you can use to dig out profitable affiliate programs for your blog.
Here are the 3 methods:
1. Join Affiliate Networks
This is the first way through which you can find affiliate programs that are niche based.
Affiliate networks act as a bridge between the publisher (you) and actual programs.
You need to join them and then find products related to your niche to get started.
The following are some of the best affiliate networks and programs that you can join to make some affiliate income.
- Amazon Associates
- Rakuten Marketing
- CJ Affiliate
- Awin (you will need to make a refundable deposit of $5 before joining)
2. Google It
This is the simplest method which you can do to find affiliate programs based on your niche.
All you need to do is type “Affiliate programs for Gardening” (Replace Gardening with your niche name) & search it.
Google will then show all the affiliate programs related to your niche.
Also, if you know any company, then you can type “Company name + affiliate program” to find their affiliate program.
3. Stalk Bloggers On Your Niche
Hold on, here stalk word does not mean in the wrong way.
What I am trying to say, is that there are many successful bloggers in your niche who are making thousands of bucks from Affiliate marketing.
You only need to visit their blog and check out what are the products they are promoting through their content.
This will give you a clear idea about which programs to join and what are their potentials.
Types Of Post That Makes Affiliate Sales
The best way to sell affiliate products is by writing content that is likely to convert.
Writing your usual content won’t bring many sales compared to a certain type of posts shown to give much better results.
Here are the posts you must write while targeting your affiliate products.
1. Review Post
In this post, all you need to do is write a detailed, honest review of the product where you talk about its pros, cons and personal experience.
Readers only land on this post if they are in a buying state which means they are ready to buy the product but need more information.
Your review post must help others to decide whether it is worth buying the product or they should look for other products.
You can download a Review article template from my Resource Library. Click here to download.
List-post is an article in a list format that lists several reasons, tips, methods, shortcuts, secrets, types, ways, trends.
It has been known for multiple conversions because you can target multiple products in a single post.
For example, “10 Best WordPress plugins you must install for your blog” is a perfect example of a list post.
While creating such post, always mention the important features & benefits of every product you include. This gives room for better conversion.
3. Comparison Post
In this post, you compare two products that do the same work.
For example, a comparison post between Bluehost & SiteGround or Namecheap & GoDaddy are a few examples.
We usually write these posts to target those people who are in a buying state but are confused between two or three products.
If you can write a post showing the comparison between them, you have better chance to sell one of them.
4. Tutorial Guides
A tutorial guide is a step-by-step instructions guide that instructs a reader on how to perform a task.
For example, a guide that shows how to stop hair fall or a guide that shows how to create a website.
These types of posts are great for affiliate marketing because you can suggest products that make it easier to achieve the targeted tasks.
If I take the example of hair fall, I can suggest different hair care products (affiliate product) that can eliminate hair fall.
The same goes for creating a website where I can suggest a web host.
This is the same post I targeted while writing my Amazon payment post discussed earlier.
Recommended Course To Change Your Affiliate Game
I also want to recommend a course I took few months ago that really changed my game.
If you are a beginner or an intermediate blogger looking to do affiliate marketing as full-time, I highly recommend this course.
Though, what I have discussed here is just the basic things in affiliate marketing that will really help you.
But, if you want to leverage your earnings and grow it over time, then “Affiliate Markeing, Simplified“is what I will prefer.
The reason is because its cheap compared to other Affiliate courses and it touches the same thing what other courses teach.
Here is a glimpse of what you are getting.
